Rigs and Racks from Xenios USA: Your Training World

Rigs and racks are the heart of every gym and every training box: they are structures with broad possibilities, which are indispensable. For this reason, the research and development department at Xenios USA has worked to make them versatile and capable of meeting the highest standards of safety and stability.

The history of these structures begins with a specific need: to perform exercises under heavy loads it was necessary to have equipment that could hold the weight at a sufficient height to perform the exercise without additional effort. In the mid-1940s, Bob Peoples was the first athlete to use a rack for training. From there, a mass production of these equipments began, which also led to the creation of rigs.

What is a Rig?

A rig refers to a longitudinal structure made up of vertical poles with an external distance between them of 180 cm. From this basic element, more complex structures can be created by joining multiple modules together, both rigs and racks, i.e., 180 and 120 cm. Thus, for example, a station composed of several rigs and racks, is commonly referred to simply as a Rig.
These stations are versatile and multifunctional: thanks to the addition of accessories and components, they allow for a wide range of workouts and meet multiple needs at once.
Depending on how one chooses to configure their rig, it is possible to create spans exclusively dedicated to pull-ups, poles for hanging climbing ropes, rings, and many other components for performing various exercises. The particularity of these equipments lies in their simplicity and modularity: starting from simple boards and poles, available in different heights and lengths, any structure can be created.

Xenios USA has designed its rig line which, thanks to its features, brings great benefits. The X-Rig world, in fact, originated from the desire to make these structures a great investment for those who purchase them: not only does it offer the highest possible quality, but thanks to regular drilling along the entire length of the poles, these rigs are versatile in their entirety.
In this way, each structure is expandable, adding stations and accessories until replicating real machinery. To optimize the creation of training environments, Xenios USA is capable of producing 3D renders to showcase the structure, evaluate the footprint and the best arrangement in space.

What is a Rack?

A gym rack refers to any structure that allows the performance of exercises with a barbell. It is therefore cages equipped with Bar J-Racks, or simple hooks on which to rest the barbell at the end of a set.
The external distance of the cage, from pole to pole, is 120 cm.

What types of Rigs are there?

Due to its modular nature, potentially an infinite number of rig stations can be created. Depending on the needs and use, one can define the number of spans, the height, and all the accessories, from the simplest to the most advanced.
Within the X-Rig world, we find 3 subcategories.

Configurable Stations

This category includes the single rig modules in the simple wall, freestanding, bridge, or with storage versions. They are then assembleable, allowing the stations to be configured in the preferred manner.

Configured Stations

If you don't have particular needs and are looking for inspiration, then this category might be useful, in which the rig modules have already been aggregated. You will find configurations with the most varied assortments, composed of accessories and stations that bring together needs and interests.

Calisthenics Stations

These rig stations are designed to meet the needs of those practicing the discipline of Calisthenics, as much of the training is based on bodyweight lifting. The composition of these structures is different from those used in other contexts: the width of the arches is greater than average, while the height varies from span to span. Components such as the parallel bars, the Vertical Ladder, the Ladder Bar, and many others are included.

What types of Racks are there?

In the case of racks, different types can be distinguished based on the features of the structure. You can find it as:

  • Squat Stand, consisting of two poles connected at the base, which has movable Bar J-Racks for the use of the barbell.
  • Cage, composed of one or more stations equipped with Bar J-Racks for barbell use. This structure can be more or less complex depending on the accessories included.

What features can Rigs and Racks have?

As with every product, Xenios USA strives for the highest quality to offer to its customers and that's why even the smallest accessory is crafted in detail.

The poles of these structures are coated with anti-scratch waxed paint while the pull-up bars, at the grip areas, are characterized by textures that enhance grip. For outdoor constructions, the treatment is even more specific: the poles are galvanized and then painted, to prevent rust.
Aesthetics are also an important factor: Xenios USA offers numerous colors to make the X-Rig stations customizable and to meet diverse needs.

In addition to choosing the number of spans, the different heights of each pole, the stations, and accessories to include, there's another factor to consider during the design: whether the structure should be Freestanding or Wall-Mounted.

  • In the first case, more space will be occupied but this will allow it to be used to its fullest potential: if it is a rig, for example, you will have all sides available for developing different workouts simultaneously.
  • A Wall-Mounted station, on the other hand, allows for the use of a free wall and the occupied space will be less; in this case, one side cannot be used but you can choose the length of the bars connecting the poles to the wall, so as to make the best use of depth and available space.

Two lines of Rigs and Racks for all needs

To meet the most diverse needs, Xenios USA has designed two lines that differ both structurally and functionally:

  • The Essentials: structurally, the stations in this line feature 6x6 cm square poles, with a thickness of 3.5 mm. Functionally, they are equipped with a limited number of holes which restricts the ability to create an infinite number of configurations.
  • Magnum+: the structure is clearly more robust, with poles having a square section of 8x8 cm and a thickness of 4.2 mm. Functionally, each pole is drilled along its entire length and on all four sides, allowing for the creation of infinite combinations and unleashing creativity.
The Essentials rigs and racks have specific accessories for this line, just as the MS+ stations have others dedicated to this model. Generally, most of the Rig and Rack accessories are called on/off, meaning they can be mounted and dismounted at any time; some, however, are fixed with bolts and for this reason are not easily removable.

How to use Rigs and Racks?

Now that we know more about the rack, we understand that to make the most of it, other equipment is necessary; among these, the barbell is certainly indispensable, and consequently, the weights.

In the case of rigs, the situation is different: thanks to the addition of some accessories, it is possible to use them independently. By adding Pull-Up bars, rings or Bodyweight Gym, in fact, the structure will already allow the execution of many exercises.
But the rig is also the ideal structure for installing stations such as Stratigo, Smith Machine, Leg Press and many others. In this way, it is possible to complete the structure making it more functional, even replacing entire machines.

Moving away from pure exercise equipment, within a rig, it is also possible to install storage of various types, which will help you create spaces for training and for reorganizing your tools: for example, you can include a dumbbell rack, a kettlebell rack and a space for training balls. The rig will become the center of your training area, where all your equipment will be well-organized and orderly.

Even if not directly within the rig, you will be able to perform exercises with kettlebells or dumbbells, alternating with pull-ups, exercises on Monkey Ladder and others, thus making your workouts increasingly comprehensive.
